Building a strong and responsive immune system is part of the discussion the world over on how to mitigate Covid-19. There are over 200 published studies that show a strong link between elderberry consumption and lessening the effects of colds, flu, and other viral based maladies. To date, no one has had the courage to test our beloved berry against Covid-19 as a symptom reducer. That has changed as of January 20, 2021. East Kent Hospitals based in the UK will be conducting its first study, it may well be underway now using an established Elderberry extract vs a placebo. In the first trial, 200+ patients who have tested positive for Covid 19 will be monitored for severity and length of illness. THANK YOU to the brave people of the UK!
An excerpt from the press release, East Kent Researchers “proposed the study after hearing about previous research which showed black elderberry fruit or extracts had antiviral properties against flu and a type of herpes. It has been adopted by the National Institute for Health Research in the UK. Ms Jessica Evans, Director of Research and Innovation at the Trust, said: “We are all very excited to have been given approval to start this trial, which could have huge implications for the treatment of coronavirus.” We will keep you all posted on the results of this study as they become available.
Meanwhile, lab research is ongoing in the US, looking at how polyphenols like anthocyanins available in certain fruits such as elderberry interfere and slow viral attachment in animal and human cells. Although not news to virologists, interest in elderberry as a natural therapy is gaining support. More work needs to be done to make this a standard therapy in the medical world. We hope to post more soon on this topic.
Always check with your medical professional if you think you are experiencing Covid symptoms. Healthy outcomes have many components. Best to be informed.
